Associate vs. Full Team Member

Everyone starts the same way. Where you go from there is up to you. Here’s the difference between the two membership levels, how you move up, and what you unlock when you do.

Associate Member — where everyone starts

Every new student joins as an Associate Member. As an associate, you can come to meetings, watch what’s happening, ask questions, hang out, and begin working through the team’s technical learning paths at your own pace.

There is no minimum hours commitment. There’s no test to pass before you walk in the door. You show up when you can, you leave when you need to, and you’ll never get a guilt trip for missing a meeting.

Associate Membership exists so that anyone curious about the team has a no-pressure way to find out if it’s for them.

Full Team Member — earned, not given

You become eligible for Full Team Member status once you’ve completed all of the team’s technical learning paths and committed to a meaningful weekly time block during the season.

Why the bar is high

FTC is competitive. To do well at qualifiers, win judged awards, and earn a shot at the State Championship or Worlds, the team needs real contributors — not just attendees. Full Membership is the team’s way of recognizing the students who put in that work, and giving them the privileges that come with leading the team.

What Full Membership Unlocks

Full Membership is a meaningful upgrade. Here’s the high-level view — eight buckets of perks — followed by the details on each one.

1 · VOICE & VOTE

Help run the team

Voting rights on major team decisions — strategy, captain elections, awards submissions, branding choices.
Eligibility to run for lead positions (CEO, Team Lead, Tech Lead, Ambassador Lead, and the rest).
A seat on the engineering review where designs get accepted or rejected.
A vote on the season’s competition strategy — driver picks, alliance preferences, scouting priorities.

2 · COMPETITION DAY

Be the team that competes

Priority for the drive team (driver, operator, coach) — only full members are eligible.
Priority for pit crew in the pit-pass-only area during matches.
Priority for the judging panel — the team that talks to judges for awards.
Priority for the scouting team during elimination rounds.

3 · RECOGNITION

See your name in the team’s story

Bio and photo on the team’s website roster — associates aren’t listed; full members are.
Listed by name in the engineering portfolio.
“Quack of the Match” and “Quack of the Week” peer-nominated MVP awards, with a traveling rubber-duck trophy.
End-of-season banquet awards — Driver of the Year, Most Improved, MVP, Iron Quack Award for grit, and more.

4 · REAL-WORLD VALUE

Build a résumé, not just a robot

Personalized letters of recommendation from mentors for college, scholarship, and job applications.
Mentors will sit for college-essay review and interview prep.
Full service-hours documentation for honor societies.
Permission to list the team on a résumé as an active member with a role title.

5 · ACCESS

Keys to the build space

Keys and access to the build space outside scheduled meetings (case-by-case for older members).
Permission to operate the 3D printers, CNC, and soldering irons unsupervised once safety-certified.
Mentoring privileges — full members can be assigned associates to coach, which doubles as leadership development.
Private full-member channel on the team’s Discord / Slack.

6 · TRAVEL PERKS

First pick when the team hits the road

Priority for State and Worlds travel slots if budget is limited.
First pick of hotel-room roommates.
Reserved seat in the team van or bus.

7 · PHYSICAL SWAG

Wear it. Stick it on stuff. Take it home.

A free duck call at induction (more on that below).
Custom jersey or polo with name and number.
An annual patch for that season’s game — earn one each year, sewable onto a jacket.
A personal rubber duck mascot to take home or stick on a workbench.
Lanyard with pit badge / photo ID.

8 · DUCK-FLAVORED BONUSES

The full Duck Tape experience

After year 2 as a full member, upgrade from the basic duck call to a fancier wood duck call.
Custom “Captain Quack” and “Lead Drake” patches for elected leads.
A team-only “Quack Code” — secret duck-call patterns used at competitions to signal scouting info or alliance picks.

In recognition of the work it took to get there — and in keeping with the team name, Ducktape Robotics — every new Full Team Member receives a free duck call at induction. Blow it loud. You earned it.
